IDF raids Hamas headquarters in Jabalia | UN Secretary General tells Netanyahu - UNRWA in danger of ceasing operations
11:25 - UN Secretary-General tells Netanyahu - UNRWA in danger of ceasing operations
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who was declared a 'persona non grata’ by Foreign Minister Israel Katz, sent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a letter during the Rosh Hashanah holiday - in which he expressed deep concern about legislation in the Knesset targeting UNRWA. The Secretary General warned that if the legislation is passed - UNRWA will not be able to continue operating in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, claiming that he would then have to bring the issue to the UN General Assembly.
The bill, which would sever ties between the State of Israel and scandal-ridden UN agency, is expected to be approved by the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Security Committee at its meeting on Sunday. The bill would prohibit all contact between Israeli government representatives and UNRWA officials. Practically, this would mean that the Ministry of Interior would not be able to issue entry visas to UNRWA employees. Additionally customs employees would not be able to handle any items imported by the agency. Finally, the agency’s tax exemptions would also be canceled.
In his letter, Guterres asked Netanyahu to intervene on the agency’s behalf.
