‘Horrible blasphemy’: Senior ultra-Orthodox rabbi condemns act of spitting at Christians
Rabbi Meir Zvi Bergman on Thursday strongly condemned the recent incidents where ultra-Orthodox Jews spit at Christians. Bergman called it a “horrible blasphemy,” according to Israel's Channel 12 news.
The rabbi is the head of the Rashbi Yeshiva in Bnei Brak and the elder of the Council of Torah Sages of the ultra-Orthodox Degel HaTorah party, one of two parts of the United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party in the Knesset.
Degel HaTorah announced that it strongly condemns "this deviant phenomenon" in reference to the spitting at Christians and called for such acts to be stopped immediately. According to reports, the party until now had been the only one not to have officially condemned the spitting incidents.
Bergman stressed, “We should protest it with all our might,” during a visit from the Knesset members of Degel HaTorah.
When party leader Moshe Gafni asked what the rabbi thought about the phenomenon, Bergman answered, “God forbid. Let it be known on the street that we are against it. It is a terrible blasphemy.”
