Steph Curry’s Hebrew sweatshirt catches fan attention after NBA finals game
The Golden State Warriors star has two Hebrew tattoos, reflecting his family’s fascination with the language
The Golden State Warriors won the NBA title on Thursday night, but another headline for many in Israel and other supporters of the Jewish state – including Christians – was the Hebrew writing on Stephen “Steph” Curry's sweatshirt.
Curry’s black hoodie which he wore during a postgame press conference after game 4 featured the phrase “האהבה לא תבל לעולם אך” – “love never fails” from 1 Corinthians 13:8.
Curry, who is a Christian, has two tattoos in Hebrew. One is shared with his wife and matches the message that appears on his sweatshirt, using different words. His second Hebrew tattoo is simply his last name in Hebrew: “קרי”.
Curry’s mother, Sonya Curry – who co-founded a Christian Montessori school with her husband, former NBA player Dell Curry – has been studying Hebrew for four years, The Jerusalem Post reported.
In 2015 she gave an interview to Israel’s premier sports channel, Sport 5, following her visit to Israel.
“When I (went) to visit Israel and Jerusalem about five years ago, and came back, (I) was just transformed spiritually...and have been basking in the experience ever since,” she said.
She showed the interviewer the Hebrew tattoo on the back of her neck that reads “חן,” meaning grace.
“I actually love Hebrew... I just love that Jesus Christ (spoke) Hebrew," she said, adding, “I wanted to learn.... so I could read the Torah in Hebrew.”
Last month, Sonya Curry published her new memoir in which she revealed that, prior to having her three children, she had an abortion in high school. She also contemplated another one – which would have been Steph.
She recalled standing outside of a Planned Parenthood office before God intervened.
“There could be no Stephen. If I would have gone through that there would have been no Wardell Stephen Curry II, and ya know, God had a plan for that child,” she said in a recent podcast interview.
