Despite tricky weather conditions, tens of thousands of Israelis hit the road and the trails today, embracing the cherished Passover tradition of spending time outdoors with family. From the Golan Heights to the Negev, cars packed the roads and hikers filled the paths, all seeking a blend of nature, relaxation, and holiday spirit.

According to the Nature and Parks Authority, more than 100,000 visitors explored Israel’s nature reserves and national parks during the holiday, with many braving the cold and rain to enjoy the beaches of the Kinneret. “The rain didn’t hold us back; we kept grilling steaks, making warm meals, and hanging out by the BBQ,” said one visitor. “Yesterday, around 1,000 of us decided to celebrate together.”

In a symbolic return to routine, Kfar Blum Kayaks – a popular water attraction in the north – reopened this morning for the first time since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks, welcoming excited visitors after more than a year and a half of closure. Families once again splashed in the waters, leaving screens behind to enjoy fresh air and quality time together.

“Every minute I’m not at home and off my screen makes me happy,” said one mother hiking with her kids. “It’s just great to be out here in the fresh air.” Popular sites like the Banias Nature Reserve, Ein Afek, Caesarea National Park, and Beit Guvrin were among the top destinations, as Israelis chose to stay local this year to support regions impacted by the war.

“In recent years, we usually went abroad, but this year – for all sorts of reasons – we chose to stay here. Honestly, we’re glad we did,” said a couple visiting the Sde Boker area. “We want to support the North and Central communities that were harder to reach. There’s so much beauty here.”

The festive mood was also tinged with a somber reminder of ongoing national pain. Many families were seen holding signs bearing the names of hostages still held in Gaza – a quiet but powerful message that their loved ones have not been forgotten.

With temperatures expected to rise in the coming days, park officials anticipate an even greater influx of visitors over the weekend. Nature reserves across the country are preparing for large crowds eager to experience the outdoors during the holiday break.
