Lapid confirms plans for 'historic' official visit to Morocco

Yesterday Axios reported that Israel's Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will visit Morocco next month in order to open a diplomatic mission in Rabat.

Lapid confirmed the report and wrote on Twitter: "The visit will take place after open direct flights to Morocco at the end of the month. This is a historic event. I want to thank the king of Morocco, Mohammed VI, for his leadership in promoting the visit and the renewal of relations."

Morocco joined the Abraham Accords in December 2020 and reestablished relations with Israel. Lapid will become the first Israeli minister to visit Morocco since then and the first visiting Israeli foreign minister since Silvan Shalom in 2003.

Lapid will meet with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, whom he has also invited to Israel.
