Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly canceled his appearance at the annual American Jewish Committee event, scheduled for next week the InterContinental David Hotel in Tel Aviv. Instead, Netanyahu will address the participants with a video statement.

The prime minister’s canceled appearance at the American Jewish Committee (AJC) event may possibly be linked to ongoing mass protests against his coalition’s controversial judicial overhaul plans, which have divided Israeli society in recent months.

After learning that Netanyahu was planning to attend, protest leaders vowed they would be "inside the hall, surrounding the hotel, on the roads, and even in the sea and air," a reference to the prime minister’s statement of readiness to counter an Iranian strike.

Tel Aviv, Israel’s secular commercial hub, has emerged as the epicenter of the massive nationwide protests against Netanyahu's government – comprised of ultra-Orthodox and far-right coalition partners – and its proposed judicial overhaul plan.

AJC is the ”leading global Jewish advocacy organization,” according to their website. With more than 75 offices, institutes, and international partnerships, the organization “seeks to build a stronger global Jewish community” by advocating for Jewish people and Israel.
