Nancy Pelosi calls for Netanyahu to resign, says he is an 'obstacle to the two-state solution'
In an interview on Irish television, published on Monday, former Speaker of the House and current Democrat representative Nancy Pelosi declared that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “should resign.”
While supporting Israel’s right of self-defense against Hamas terrorists, Pelosi argued that the Israeli government’s response in Gaza under Netanyahu’s leadership has gone too far, and that Netanyahu is “ultimately responsible.”
"We recognize Israel's right to protect itself,” Pelosi said. “We reject the policy and the practice of Netanyahu — terrible. What could be worse than what he has done in response?"
Pelosi, a supporter of the two-state solution, said Netanyahu’s leadership hinders any solution for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
"I don't know whether he's afraid of peace, incapable of peace, or just doesn't want peace,” she said. “But he has been an obstacle to the two-state solution."
On the other hand, Pelosi praised U.S. President Joe Biden’s leadership.
"The biggest advocate for humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians has been Joe Biden; he's the only one advocating at that level,” she said.
Pelosi’s comments regarding Netanyahu echo statements made by Jewish Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
In March, Schumer said that Netanyahu was one of “four major obstacles” to achieving peace, alongside “Hamas, and the Palestinians who support and tolerate their evil ways”; “radical right-wing Israelis in government and society”; and the president of the Palestinian Authority "Mahmoud Abbas."
After decrying Netanyahu’s leadership, Schumer called for a new election in Israel.
“I believe a new election is the only way to allow for a healthy and open decision-making process about the future of Israel, at a time when so many Israelis have lost their confidence in the vision and direction of their government.”
