Michael Herzog leading candidate for Israeli ambassadorship to US
According to a senior Israeli official, Michael Herzog is top choice for the critical position as Israeli ambassador to the United States, a position currently held by Gilad Erdan.
Herzog had a long career in the Israel Defense Forces, served as head of strategic planning and retired as a Brigadier-General. He served in other high level positions as senior advisor to five ministers of defense, including Benny Gantz, the current minister.
He developed many connections in Washington as former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's special envoy for the peace process in 2009-2010, during which he participated in the majority of rounds of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, Jordanians and Syrians.
