Israeli Defense Minister Gantz thanks Biden for US support toward regional security
Gantz emphasized that the unique bond between Israel and the U.S. is “stronger than ever”
Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz demonstrated the air and missile defense systems to U.S. President Joe Biden and his entourage at Ben-Gurion International Airport on Wednesday.
Alongside Biden, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan joined the tour. Top Israeli officials in attendance included Israel Defense Forces Commander-in-Chief Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi, Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defense Maj.-Gen. (Res.) Amir Eshel, National Security Council head Eyal Hulata and Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Herzog.
At the airport’s Defense Ministry site, Gantz explained elements of Israel’s Iron Dome defense system and high power laser-defense system. The defense minister presented a remotely piloted aircraft, which the laser system successfully intercepted in a test in March.
The defense minister thanked Biden for the support of the U.S.
“During your tenure, we have made groundbreaking strides in strengthening regional security cooperation – we are extremely appreciative of your leadership,” Gantz said. “We are grateful for your steadfast support for Israel’s security and for the assistance that was approved, including $1 billion for the replenishment of Iron Dome systems.”
“Our regional cooperation includes countries that seek stability and peace,” Gantz said, in a nod to other Middle East nations that have strengthened ties with Israel in recent years, in particular since the Abraham Accords.
“The regional architecture and stability that the U.S. is leading will promote economic growth and the protection of human rights in the region,” he said. “I am certain that under your leadership, and together with U.S. security organizations, we will continue developing defense cooperation on land, in the air, in the maritime arena and in cyberspace.”
Gantz emphasized that the unique bond between Israel and the U.S. is “stronger than ever.”
In light of the nations’ friendship, “the State of Israel is certain that the president will continue taking the measures necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” Gantz noted.
