Iranian FM denies reports that President Pezeshkian said Iran is 'willing to put all our weapons aside if Israel is willing to do the same'
Iran’s foreign minister has denied reports that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran seeks to reduce tension with Israel at the UN this Monday.
Pezeshkian is currently in New York attending the United Nation’s annual General Assembly meeting.
The media widely reported statements by the Iranian president regarding the conflict with Israel, in which he blamed the escalations on Israeli aggression.
“We don’t want to fight,” Pezeshkian reportedly said. “It’s Israel that wants to drag everyone into war and destabilize the region. They are dragging us to a point where we do not wish to go.”
“We are willing to put all our weapons aside so long as Israel is willing to do the same,” he declared.
He also reiterated his claims that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons and emphasized that the regime is “still ready to live up to the same framework” agreed to in 2015’s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
A statement issued by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Pezeshkian’s views had been misrepresented by the media.
“Contrary to what has been reported, President Pezeshkian, in a meeting with some American media executives, strongly condemned the crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza and the invasion of Lebanon by the Zionist regime this morning, New York local time, and emphasized that these crimes do not conform to any humanitarian and international standards and must be stopped,” Araghchi said.
“He also clearly stated that these crimes, including the assassination of Martyr Haniyeh in Tehran, will not go unanswered and that this answer will be implemented in due time.”
