The Iraqi activist who is bitterly fighting the spread of Islam

It was the clip, recently sent to me by a British friend, which drew my curiosity to find out who Sabat Matthew Momika is. My conclusion is that he’s either one brave soul or a deranged provocateur with a death wish, because his bitter fight against radical Islam has, undoubtedly, put a huge target on his back.

The 38-year-old, who was raised in an Assyrian church, was forced to flee his hometown, in the province of Ninevah, Iraq when a civil war began to viciously target Christians, the minority in the Islamic State. In his case, it was after having been sentenced to a prison term of three years for accidentally killing someone in a car accident, that he realized he could no longer stay.

Moving around to other areas within Iraq, he eventually joined the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) as a resistance fighter of ISIS, while, at the same time, founding two other militia movements, the Syriac Democratic Union and the Falcons of the Syriac forces. What ended up as a battle over rivalry, caused him to, once again, flee in 2017, only this time to Germany, later arriving in Sweden where he sought refugee status. In 2021, he was finally given a temporary residence permit but one which expired in April 2024.

Although he requested citizenship, he was subsequently denied, due to having omitted his militant associations, on his asylum application. Yet, somehow, he was given a residence permit to remain, albeit under a continuing investigation.

Controversial to the end, Momika has burned Qurans at public demonstrations, provoking much anger and vilification, to the extent that it was recommended that he be expelled from Sweden. Knowing his fate, if that were to happen, he sought asylum in Norway, and although reports of his death began to circulate, he ended up returning to Sweden once he was threatened with deportation.

No longer claiming to be a Christian, today, Momika is an avowed atheist who has chosen to call out radical Islam for what it is – a religion that causes people fear, anxiety and terror as they see what is being done in its name.

In one of his recent posts on 𝕏, he airs a young Muslim man, who apparently shares his deep convictions over what he refers to as the poisonous teachings of Islam, expressing his thoughts in an open letter forum, by addressing his fellow Muslims, who he says have brought the disdain for their religion on themselves, as a result of their outrageous beliefs and behavior.

Using the word “kuffar,” defined as an Arabic term in Islam that refers to a person who does not believe in the God of Islam, this same young man, in his clip, says that “unbelievers” have moved forward in the world, while Muslims are still stuck in a backward existence, forced to adhere to the word of imams and teachings from the Middle Ages, which do nothing to promote useful advances that have been achieved by the same unbelievers Islam hates. In the end, it is these non-Muslims who have helped mankind, through science, technology and medicine, improving the lives of all.

He then asks, “Why on earth would anyone want to be Muslim today,” making the case of how unappealing the religion is since it engenders fear and worry. In fact, he exposes the myth that the West and Israel, referred to as the Big Satan and the Little Satan respectively, are the source of the problem, by claiming that even if Israel and the West were to be eliminated, it wouldn’t take long before Muslims would be stabbing one another.

In yet another post, Momika brings, to the attention of his viewers, the deplorable case of a Muslim scholar who says it’s okay to rape non-Muslim women to humiliate them.

Finally, another post is captioned, “This is not a trash bag. Do you know what it is?” It’s not hard to figure out that the features, under the black plastic covering, are those of a woman whose outline is only recognizable as a result of the wrapping exposing what is clearly a female completely covered up, not even allowed to breathe the air.

Despite Momika’s very precarious status, as he continues to be embroiled in his fight for Swedish residency, his posts keep coming, all filled with highly controversial depictions of radical Islam, on social media, in the hope of educating everyone as to why he is fighting for a West free of Islam. In fact, he believes that Marine LePen will, one day, become the French president, describing her as “a nightmare for Muslims.”

Noting that Switzerland has banned the hijab, refusing to recognize Islam as an official religion, Momika asks if his viewers believe that other European countries will follow their lead. With his finger on the pulse of what is happening in other countries, Momika has posted, on many different platforms, how Muslims are trying to take over their societies and bring their violent ways to these new Western countries which they now call home.

Categorized by The New Arab, an online news service, as “an infamous opportunist Iraqi who burns Qurans in Sweden, seeking to get public posts,” it’s hard to believe that anyone, with a bit of sanity, would place themselves in such a dangerous position, all for the sake of posts.

Yet, Momika seems to be fearless in the face of the constant stream of threats he receives, as he continues to push the envelope, in his unrelenting activism to call attention to the worldwide dangers he sees as Muslims gain more influence and power in their respective nations.

Whether or not he is a lunatic, who has figured out a way to gain attention, or a sincere individual whose personal experience with radical Islam has caused him to be the voice of reason, when it comes to one of the greatest threats to civilized societies, he’s worth investigating to come to your own conclusion about who he really is. Because, as the threat of Islamic terror continues to spread globally, it might be prudent to listen to someone whose own history could shed some light on how he thinks this will all end.

From what most of us have been able to glean, it doesn’t sound as if anything good will emerge from a radicalized Islamic presence in the West.
