Biden says aerial objects shot down last week are not linked to China’s spying operation
U.S. President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the three aerial objects that the military shot down last week over U.S. airspace are not believed to be connected to China’s spy balloon program.
“We don’t yet know exactly what these three objects were but nothing right now suggests they were related to China’s spy balloon program or that they were surveillance vehicles from any other country,” Biden said during a press briefing.
“The intelligence community’s current assessment is that these three objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research,” the president added.
Nevertheless, Biden noted that he gave the order to take the flying objects down, out of an abundance of caution.
U.S. fighter jets removed at least four aerial objects in recent days, including a suspected Chinese spy balloon that drifted into American airspace through Canada and was downed off the coast of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
