Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with Israel’s new President Isaac Herzog to congratulate him on his election.
“I spoke this evening with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who called to congratulate me on entering my new role,” tweeted Herzog. “I thanked him and stressed that it is my intention to continue to maintain ongoing contact with him as past presidents have.”
The Palestinian Authority Presidency confirmed the call and released a statement through the official WAFA news agency: “The president stressed the need to bring about a comprehensive truce in Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem.”
