Netanyahu ally Tzachi Hanegbi to head National Security Council
Incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose Likud party member Tzachi Hanegbi as the next head of the National Security Council.
Hanegbi has served in a variety of government positions over the last 30 years, including ministerial posts in the environment, transportation, health and justice sectors. He has also worked with intelligence agencies, and this recent appointment elevates him to a senior level position in the new government coalition.
This is a big move up for the minister, who served with no portfolio from 2020 to 2021.
Having made threats of a potential Israeli airstrike on Iran in the past, Hanegbi is viewed as a fierce opponent of the Iranian regime and its development of nuclear weapons.
Outgoing Israeli Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar congratulated Hanegbi for the appointment, noting that his many years of experience will serve him well as he decides which strategies are best for ensuring the safety of Israel.
