Israeli MK praises mother of rescued IDF soldier: ‘I was jealous of her’ faith and love for God

The video of Ori’s mother crying out to God for her daughter's release was shared widely in Israel

In a video clip on the Knesset TV channel, Galit Distel-Atbaryan, a Member of Knesset, shared how deeply she was affected by watching the mother of Ori Megidish, the IDF soldier rescued from Gaza, praying to God for her daughter's release

In the video, which was shared widely on social media in Israel, Margalit Megidish, is seen praying the prayer called Hafrashat Challah, where a piece of dough is torn off and a blessing said before burning the piece that is separated. (This is a practice that comes the Book of Numbers 15:20-21, and may be the reason behind Paul’s statement in Romans 11:16.)

As she said the traditional prayer on behalf of her daughter Ori, Margalit burst into spontaneous prayer, asking God to restore her captive daughter to her.

“Ori, I am with you…I love you, Ori!” Margalit cries.

“Bring back all the captives!” Margalit pleads. “Please, Creator of the World, please. I love you. I would die for you!” [This is a popular expression in Hebrew to mean that you are deeply in love with someone.]

Distel-Atbaryan shared that, to her, Margalit’s prayer was not a simplistic or primitive faith but “a powerful and sophisticated spiritual level.”

The Knesset member said she was jealous of Margalit’s faith and love for God.

“She understood in depth that the entire Divine Providence starts and ends with good, and even when you find yourself in the Valley of the Shadow of Death, you will not fear evil because He is with you,” Distel-Atbaryan said.

“Even if you are in a dark pit, a mother who is worrying about her baby girl,” she continued, “who is in the hands of the worst human predators, the wildest humans, even then she understands deep in her heart, that the Holy One, Blessed is He, is doing something for the good of some general interest at that the moment, in her flesh, she cannot see.”

“I want to say to Margalit, this righteous mother, 'You are my hero, a sign and an example for me; you are my model, and I wish I could reach to the spiritual heights and the sanctifying of the Name that you did. Continue to pray for all the rest of the captives.”
