Israeli defense minister holds briefing with military officials regarding ‘security incidents’

Meeting comes after an explosion at the Megiddo Junction in northern Israel, thought to be a terror attack

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has been meeting with army and defense chiefs over a number of unspecified “security incidents,” his office said in a rare statement on Tuesday.

Gallant met with IDF Chief Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, head of Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, the head of the IDF's Operations Directorate, Maj.-Gen. Oded Basiuk and Military Intelligence head, Maj.-Gen. Aharon Haliva.

The defense minister's office reportedly did not explain or elaborate upon the “security incidents” due to ongoing investigations and security concerns.

Gallant’s briefings with the top officials came just one day after a 21-year-old Arab man from the village of Salem, Shareef ad-Din, was seriously wounded in an explosion on the Route 65 Highway at the Megiddo Junction in northern Israel, which remained closed for 10 hours after the incident.

The explosion is believed to have been a terror attack, reportedly from a large roadside bomb.

The statement from Gallant's office noted that the officials presented him with their findings about the security incident and that “the defense minister instructed them to continue efforts to ensure the daily routine of Israeli citizens.”

Palestinian terrorists in recent months have increasingly used bombs in their attacks, including two foiled attempts on Friday to break into settlements with improvised explosive devices. Terrorists also regularly hurl explosive devices during confrontations with IDF soldiers in the West Bank.
