Historic High Court hearing begins in Jerusalem
The High Court of Justice in Jerusalem began the unprecedented legal hearing on the Reasonableness Standard Law with a panel composed of all 15 Supreme Court Justices on Tuesday morning.
The hearing began with statements by Knesset Legal Advisor Yitzhak Bart and Constitution, Law and Justice Committee head Knesset Member Simcha Rothman, who rejected petitions against the Basic Law: The Judiciary, which was amended by the Reasonableness Standard Law.
In his speech, Rothman argued that every time the court interfered in the legislation of the Knesset, it crossed into the realm of governance and expanded its own power, a claim which the justices disputed.
The hearing is expected to last the entire day, however, the court will not issue a decision at the end of the session.
