Israel increases military ties with Morocco

Israel and Morocco launched a bilateral defense establishment steering committee within the first two days of meetings in Rabat, Morocco, the Israeli Ministry of Defense reported.

The meeting, which began on Tuesday, looked at military cooperation between the two countries in the areas of logistics, training and equipment. The meeting was co-chaired by Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces Belkhir El Farouk and Director of the Politico-Military Affairs Office of the Israeli Defense Ministry Dror Shalom.

According to a statement released by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, the two nations will “further strengthen cooperation and expand it to other areas, including in intelligence, air defense and electronic warfare.”

In the statement, El Farouk said Israeli-Moroccan military cooperation is “based on mutual trust and support.”

Israel and Morocco have deepened and expanded their defense and military ties since the signing of a defense MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) in November 2021.

In July of last year, the Israeli Defense Forces then-Chief of the General Staff Aviv Kochavi made the first visit by an Israeli Army chief to Morocco.

Kochavi's visit came shortly after Israel was invited for the first time to be an observer at a U.S.-led international military exercise held in Morocco.
