Guatemala's newly-elected president has close Israel connection

Guatemala elected the progressive Bernardo Arévalo as its new president on Sunday. Preliminary results gave Arévalo 58% of the vote, but the official results are yet to be announced.

Arévalo’s connection to the Jewish state began when his father, former president Juan José Arévalo, served as Guatemala’s ambassador to Israel, the Times of Israel reported.

During that time, Arévalo earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He later served in Guatemala’s foreign service, including as a minister counselor in Israel.

The newly-elected president will lead the Central American nation of over 17 million citizens in a four-year term.
