A communiqué agreed upon by G7 nations omitted any mention of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict due to pressure from the United States.

“There had been wrangling over language regarding Gaza and the Middle East, notably the notion of a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, something the U.S. was resisting,” Reuters reported. “The final version made no mention of a two-state solution, dropping language that had stressed its importance in earlier drafts of the text.”

Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) nations – Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States – met in Charlevoix, Canada, along with the High Representative of the European Union, to produce the communique.

The official statement presented G7’s united positions on various conflicts around the world, including the war between Russia and Ukraine and China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the statement “unequivocally condemned Hamas,” and “recognized Israel’s inherent right to defend itself consistent with international law.”

It also expressed G7’s “readiness to engage with Arab partners on their proposals to chart a way forward on reconstruction in Gaza and build a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace,” stressing that “Hamas can have no role in Gaza’s future and must never again be a threat to Israel.”

The statement also condemned Iran as “the principal source of regional instability,” stating that it “must never be allowed to develop and acquire a nuclear weapon,” and that it “must now change course, de-escalate and choose diplomacy. “
