'F*** THE JEWS' spray-painted on car in Sydney, Australia
On Monday, a vehicle in an eastern neighborhood of Sydney, Australia, was found to have been vandalized with the words “F*** THE JEWS” spray-painted on its side.
Stuart Veron, the non-Jewish owner of the vandalized car, said that “whoever did this is a rat, there’s no place for this in our community or anywhere in Australia,” Ynet News reported.
Veron’s Jewish neighbor Sharon Greenberg said her daughter first noticed it, and that seeing the anti-Jewish vandalism was “like a cricket bat that just hits your head, it’s just a shock that it’s here.”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly decried the vandalism.
“Antisemitism is a scourge, and any event such as this, targeting people because of who they are, is not the Australian values that I hold dear, and the Australian values that are held dear by, overwhelmingly, [the majority of] Australians,” Albanese said.
The President of the Jewish Board of Deputies in New South Wales, David Ossip, also responded to the incident, saying that “it is unacceptable that Jewish Australians and Australians of all backgrounds have had to wake up yet again and see messages of hate prominently displayed in their neighborhood.”
Chris Minns, the current premier of New South Wales, said that his government “is committed to blunting this appalling increase in hateful and violent acts against the Jewish community.”
Australia’s ABC News noted that several incidents of anti-Israel vandalism took place last year in eastern Sydney, including as recently as Dec. 11, when “several homes were graffitied with ‘Kill Israel [sic]’ and a car was set alight.”
