WATCH: Surviving the Holocaust: Lev Posherstnik's story of strength, loss and resilience
Lev Posherstnik, a Holocaust survivor who lived through the horrors of the Minsk ghetto, shares his powerful story of survival, loss, and resilience. Now 92 years old and living in Israel for the past 28 years, Lev reflects on his life during one of history's darkest periods.
“When the war started, I was 9 years old,” Lev recalls. Forced into the ghetto with his family, he endured unimaginable tragedies. His grandfather was brutally killed by German soldiers, and his mother, who tried to escape persecution by changing her identity, was arrested and murdered.
Lev recounts the last time he saw his mother: “She stroked my head and extended her hand toward me. She said, ‘Son, how are you living in the ghetto?’ I said, ‘Mom, we're doing well.’ That was the last time I saw her.”
The Holocaust left Lev orphaned and alone at a young age. After witnessing the murder of his grandmother and younger sister during a ghetto pogrom, he fled to the Russian countryside, begging for food and hiding to survive.
Despite the horrors he endured, Lev’s spirit remains unbroken. Reflecting on his life in Israel, he shares, “I love this country very much. No matter how difficult life gets, I still think this country is the best.”
Lev’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a reminder of the importance of remembering the past to protect the future. “God grant that our children never experience what happened during the Great Patriotic War,” he says, his voice filled with both sorrow and hope.
