Transcript [00:12] Hello all Israel News viewers. I'm [00:14] Mulan. This is Levy from Discover [00:16] Israel. Tour with Ev. Levy. Where are [00:17] we? What are we doing here? [00:19] >> We're in the ancient city of Tarius. [00:21] Here we are on the seashores of the Sea [00:23] of the Galilee or the Sea of Tiberius uh [00:25] or the Sea of Raat. Uh reference. This [00:27] is a very strategic and important site [00:30] site from the times of Jesus 2,000 years [00:32] ago. [00:33] >> Let's go explore. [00:37] [music] [00:45] Here we are standing in the ancient [00:47] Tiberius. Tiberius Caesar was the ruler [00:51] of the whole Roman Empire during the [00:54] times of [music] Jesus. Here in Lucas, [00:55] we could read about the Caesar Tiberius, [00:58] which this city is named after [01:03] in the 15th year of the leadership of [01:05] [music] Tiberius, linking this city [01:08] directly to the story of Jesus. From [01:10] this great viewpoint, we have can see [01:12] how the city was laid out. Here we can [01:13] see the theater like every good Roman [01:15] city had. We had the coder going from [01:18] north to south straight down the bin [01:20] where that walkway is and we can see the [01:22] port city over here which would then [01:24] take trade going north to south or [01:26] anywhere in the sea of the Galilee. [01:31] The governor of this peninsula was [01:33] Pontis Palatis and Herod who was the [01:36] tetrarch of the area. He dedicates this [01:39] city to Tiberius Caesar. This is the [01:44] trade capital of the northern peninsula [01:48] of Israel during the times of Jesus. And [01:50] we heard of Jesus going to cities such [01:52] as Kafnum or Capernium and um Taba. And [01:58] so this was definitely a place that he [02:00] most likely would have passed. I [02:02] couldn't say he stood where we're [02:03] standing right now, but I could [02:04] definitely say that he saw the view that [02:06] we're looking at right now. And this [02:08] city then turns into a Jewish capital as [02:12] Jesus was Jewish. The city of Tabberas [02:14] terms become the capital of Jewish Torah [02:17] study after the destruction of the [02:18] second temple and the downfall of [02:20] [music] the revolt of BFA in the year [02:23] 132 until 135136. [02:26] So Jerusalem then becomes the city Jews [02:28] are forbidden to come to. They come to [02:29] the northern parts of is Israel in the [02:31] Galilee. We can see the rabbis writing [02:35] the Mishna. [music] They sit here and a [02:37] lot of them the Mishna was then [02:38] accumulated in Tipi with Rabbi Yayod [02:40] Nasi and then the Jewish Talmud the [02:42] Jerusalem Talmud uh was written here by [02:45] members of Sanhedrin and other rabbis [02:47] inside the city of Tarius. Eventually [02:50] the Sanhedrin does move here until the [02:53] year 425 where we see that is the last [02:55] year that we have the Sanhedrin. So an [02:57] essential part development of Judaism [02:59] after the destruction of the second [03:00] temple happens in the city of Tarius. [03:03] We're going to go check out now. [03:15] We're now at the historic site of [03:18] Tavarius next to the theater that would [03:20] have held approximately between 4 to [03:22] 6,000 people. Now, initially this place [03:24] had three stories going up. Uh in the [03:27] first century it was originally built. [03:29] Then it was rebuilt again in the third [03:31] and the fourth century terrible [03:33] earthquake came and brought it down. Uh [03:35] and eventually the the third story was [03:38] completely not used. It was filled up [03:40] and by the year 749 already it was just [03:43] filled with dirt and used for residents [03:45] house. But for today's importance with [03:47] archaeology, we've dug all the way down. [03:49] Now we're standing on the original Roman [03:51] uh plateau. You can see before us. This [03:54] area is the orchestra. This is where the [03:55] people would have sat. Now, we can see [03:57] the initial stage over here. Now, it was [03:59] built quite smart cuz they built it [04:02] perfectly so the sun doesn't go into the [04:04] people's eyes uh while they're sitting [04:06] down. As you can see, the sun's going [04:07] from the east to the west right over [04:10] this theater. It never actually blocks [04:12] their eyes. [04:18] [music] [04:24] Every classic Roman city will have a [04:26] theater, a temple, possibly a brothel, [04:29] and a bath house. One of the most [04:31] important things in Roman culture. So, [04:33] first, you know, you'd wrestle, you'd [04:35] sweat out any toxins you'd have, and [04:37] then you'd go into um maybe a cold room [04:40] or a hot room, and uh you'd go through [04:42] this kind of cycle, which was very much [04:44] part of culture. As a Roman soldier, [04:46] you'd get it for free, which is very [04:47] exciting. [05:02] We're now in the private rooms of the [05:04] bath house where if you wanted uh uh a [05:07] special activity such as soap being [05:08] rubbed on you and scraped off or a [05:10] massage, uh you'd go in of the back [05:13] rooms. Um so you can see these little [05:14] sections where would be personal [05:16] sections. People would sit down and then [05:18] you'd get your personal treatment here [05:20] secluded away from everyone else. In [05:22] more wealthier places such as Tipori [05:25] Okisaria, you can see these places are [05:27] filled with marble. But here we can see [05:29] the spackle on the outside with the clay [05:31] st the clay tablets to actually build [05:33] the structure. You can see these [05:35] aqueduct sort of uh indents where the [05:37] water would have run through. [05:47] We look just here. We can see part of [05:49] the beautiful mosaics. We have the color [05:51] red, color blue, color white. It's kind [05:55] of blackish blue. More blue. You know [05:57] that it was more of an important and [05:58] wealthier place. Here's just more of the [06:00] private rooms. You can see the systems [06:02] underneath. [06:15] I guess [06:24] the Sanhedrin, the legislative council [06:27] of the Judean Empire, moves out of the [06:30] temple around the year 30 to the year [06:32] 40. That same time is the years where [06:35] Jesus prophesizes the destruction of the [06:37] second temple. Great corruption was [06:38] happening between the sects of the Jews [06:40] and they wanted to move out and not be [06:42] part of it. They end up traveling all [06:44] around Israel including Yav including [06:47] Shahim Shaim Bimori and eventually they [06:51] come here to Davia. I'm standing now in [06:53] the location proposed to where they [06:54] actually set. The [music] suggested [06:56] building looks somewhat like this with [06:59] uh great architecture [music] and in [07:02] important symbols. Here this column [07:04] which is clearly been used for a second [07:06] time would have been one of the columns [07:07] standing in the room of the Sanhedrin. [07:09] Here we can see a Corinthian capital [07:12] from [07:13] limestone which would have been at uh [07:15] the the top of it. [07:20] The Sanhedrin profusely rejected the [07:23] ideas of Jesus of this reform of this [07:26] trying to correct people's ways. At that [07:29] time it was a very sensitive period of [07:30] time. There were lots of sects of Jews [07:33] who were now fighting over this right [07:34] way. Some of them which core believes [07:37] were indifferent to the other Jews. So [07:39] Jesus's perspective and sort of reform [07:42] that he was trying to bring into this [07:44] region and the region of Jerusalem was [07:47] considered dangerous and considered [07:48] [music] even at one point blasphemous [07:51] against God. It's kind of this fear [07:53] factor that you know someone who's so [07:55] successful so fast could create great [07:57] danger uh for the set ideologies that [08:00] were already in place. [08:02] >> So I'm going to go into the Roman bath [08:06] house. As you can see, I'm just thinking [08:10] about the times of Yeshua and [snorts] [08:13] all of the customs that they had and [08:15] just how different it was from the [08:18] kingdom of God, right? The kingdom that [08:22] Yeshua came with, the kingdom that he [08:24] spoke about. [snorts] And [08:28] I'm sure there were many that might have [08:30] wanted to follow that way, but the [08:34] system around them, the culture, the [08:36] corruption, right? It probably made it [08:38] very hard to be able to follow that way. [08:43] Uh society was built that way, that way [08:46] at that time in a sort of structure that [08:49] you didn't want to be the odd one out, [08:51] right? You didn't want to be without [08:52] protection. And when Yeshua stands uh [08:55] and before the Sanhedrin and is in front [08:58] of a trial before them before he's going [09:00] to be crucified, you can see just how [09:02] much he was going to stand alone. But he [09:04] wasn't alone. God was with him. And so [09:06] this is an encouragement to us that even [09:08] if your belief contradicts the whole [09:10] system, the culture around you, it's [09:12] still worth standing for and fighting [09:14] for. [09:35] We're about to go into the water of the [09:37] Sea of Galilee. I want to show you guys [09:40] just how beautiful it is. Even after [09:42] sunset, you can see how calm it is. [09:45] These are the very waters that Yeshua [09:48] [music] uh and the disciples would uh [09:50] fish in these waters. He walked on these [09:53] waters. He uh calmed [music] the storm [09:55] in this waters. He rebuked the waters, [09:57] the storm, right? And he also gave them [10:00] faith and a lot of parables on these [10:02] hills next to these waters. And also a [10:04] lot of people would follow him, right? [10:06] They would follow him in the boat [10:07] because they wanted to be near Yeshua. [10:09] But I think what's really important is [10:11] that many of the disciples, they were [10:12] actually called from within their fisher [10:15] boats, right? They were here in these [10:17] waters and [music] he called them and [10:18] they went after him. And I think that [10:20] that is a sort of a testament to the [10:23] power that he held that he had so much [10:25] influence that even strangers would come [10:28] and see him and say, "There's something [10:29] there. I'm going to follow this. [10:41] It's been such a beautiful day here in [10:43] the modern city of Taria and also in the [10:45] ancient city of learning about Yeshua, [10:47] learning about the city [music] and [10:49] everyone that ruled uh and didn't rule [10:51] at that time. Levy, how do you feel [10:53] about this place? [10:54] >> I feel great. You just come to the Sea [10:55] of the Galilee. You can feel the [music] [10:57] calm, serene spirit that uh Jesus would [11:01] have felt standing out here. It really [11:03] can connect you to the stories and the [11:05] places that he would have walked, the [11:06] places that he would have seen can [11:07] deepen faith. [11:08] >> Yeah. Thank you [music] so much for [11:09] watching.
