UNSC to convene first official discussion on hostages in Gaza since war began
The first official discussion by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) concerning the Israeli hostages held captive by Hamas terrorists in Gaza is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, stated Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon in a post on 𝕏.
While the UNSC has previously convened to discuss the Israel-Hamas war – and has issued various statements regarding the hostages – it had not previously held a meeting specifically dedicated to discussing the hostage situation.
“Following my urgent request,” Danon wrote, “the UN Security Council will finally convene on Wednesday for the first time since the October 7 massacre to hold an official discussion on the hostages.”
The meeting is set to take place just days after the bodies of six hostages were recovered by Israel Defense Forces. The IDF has since confirmed that the hostages were executed by Hamas shortly before Israeli soldiers found them.
Danon criticized the UNSC for not holding such a meeting sooner.
“It is a disgrace that it has taken the Council 11 months and the brutal execution of six hostages by Hamas terrorists to finally convene this discussion,” he wrote, before calling on the the UNSC to condemn Hamas.
“The Security Council must unequivocally condemn this Nazi-like terrorist organization and demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
While in late March, the UNSC called for "the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages" in Resolution 2728, the document did not specifically mention Hamas by name.
