In the past 24 hours, Russia has issued a series of official statements expressing strong opposition to U.S. involvement in the war against Iran. Russian officials also voiced fierce objections to any physical harm against Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed the possibility of U.S. entry into the war on Israel’s side late Thursday night, saying: “This greatly concerns us. It would mean a further escalation of the regional conflict.”

Peskov’s remarks came after Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened Khamenei’s life in response to Iran’s missile attack on Israel, which severely damaged Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva. Katz described Khamenei as a “modern Hitler” and said, “He must not remain alive.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also responded to the attack on social media, writing: “Israel will make the tyrants in Tehran pay the full price.”

In a rare interview with Fox News, Peskov also addressed the possibility of the United States using nuclear weapons in strikes on Iran, saying: “That would be a catastrophic development, but I don’t want to respond to various speculations.” On the possibility of physical harm to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Peskov stated clearly: “Our response to the assassination of Khamenei would be extremely negative.”

In recent days, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated Moscow’s readiness to serve as a mediator between Jerusalem and Tehran. During a press conference this week in St. Petersburg, Putin said: “It’s possible to reach a formula that allows Iran to pursue civilian nuclear development while easing Israel’s concerns.”
