Newsweek ranks Israel's Sheba Medical Center as the world’s 8th best hospital

Newsweek ranked Israel's Sheba Medical Center as the world’s 8th best hospital in its latest prominent annual ranking. This marked an improvement from last year’s ranking that placed Sheba in the 9th place.
Approximately 2,445 medical institutions from 30 countries around the world were ranked in the Newsweek report. The countries were chosen based on various criteria, including life expectancy, number of hospitals, population size and available data.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, ranked as the world’s best hospital for the second consecutive year. The Cleveland Clinic, located in Cleveland, Ohio, ranked second place, followed by Canada’s Toronto General – University Health Network in third place.
Sweden’s Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset in Stockholm – ranked fifth – was the highest ranked medical institution outside North America.
The top ten ranking was dominated by four American hospitals and medical institutions from advanced countries such as Canada, Israel, Germany, Singapore, Switzerland and Sweden.
The Sheba Medical Center (also known as Tel Hashomer Hospital), which is located close to Tel Aviv, celebrated its rise in Newsweek’s prestigious ranking.
“This year’s rise reflects our central role in treating the majority of war casualties and providing long-term care for hostages returning from Hamas captivity. The hospital has also become a key player in Israel’s economic growth, with Sheba-developed technologies sold to global pharmaceutical and medical device giants for approximately $1 billion.
Additionally, Sheba is undergoing a transformation to become an AI-driven medical center,” the hospital said in an official statement.
Prof. Yitshak Kreiss, the director of the Sheba Medical Center, praised his medical institution as a central player in the Jewish state’s advanced healthcare system.
“As a symbol of Israeli resilience and the flagship of the public health care system, we have a duty to address national health and social challenges, stand by those in need, and continuously set higher standards, Kreiss said.
Despite its tiny size, Israel has 10 hospitals represented in the Newsweek ranking.
The Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center improved its ranking from 64th to 60th place. The Israeli Rabin Medical Center climbed from 158th to 122nd place, and Jerusalem’s Hadassah University Hospital – Ein Kerem - ranked 242nd place.
In May 2023, Sheba became an integral member of the Mayo Clinic’s global alliance, which further strengthened the Israeli hospital’s global position.
Director of Transformation and Innovation at the Sheba Medical Center, Prof. Eyal Zimlichman, welcomed the close cooperation with the Mayo Clinic and its international medical partners.
"We are thrilled to be part of this historic alliance to transform the future of healthcare," Zimlichman stated.
The Sheba Medical Center is also highly regarded globally for integrating advanced technologies in its healthcare system. In September 2023, Sheba Medical Center was ranked among the world’s 20 leading “smart hospitals.”
