Israeli military thwarted attempt to smuggle Iran-made explosives from Jordan into Israel last month
The Israel Defense Forces revealed on Sunday it had successfully prevented a smuggling attempt of Iranian-made explosives from Jordan into Israel.
Back in July, the Israeli army did not reveal the origin or nature of the seized weaponry on the Jordanian-Israeli border but merely stated it had thwarted an “unusual” attempt to smuggle weapons in the strategically important Jordan Valley close to Ashdot Yaakov.
Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency (ISA), believes the smuggled explosives were earmarked for local terrorist organizations in Judea and Samaria, known as the West Bank.
The Iranian ayatollah regime has invested considerable resources in anti-Israel terror proxies such as militias in Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Tehran has increased its support for local terror groups in the West Bank, with a special focus on the terror hubs in Jenin and Nablus.
Hamas and PIJ have increasingly sought to destabilize the Palestinian Authority (PA) with the help of Iranian assistance with terror activities. In June, the PA warned that Iran's influence was spreading across the West Bank via its support of local terror organizations.
“Iran is already here, in the West Bank,” an unnamed PA official told The Jerusalem Post.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently blamed Iran and its terror proxies for the growing terror in the Judea and Samaria region.
“We are in the midst of a terror attack. This terror attack is encouraged, guided, funded by Iran and its satellite states,” Netanyahu stated.
On Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant urged UN Sec.-Gen. Antonio Guterres to stop the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah from provoking a major war with the Jewish state.
