Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant presented Iran as a global security threat during his official two-day visit to Azerbaijan this week.

Located in the strategically important Caucasus region, Azerbaijan has developed close ties with Israel, while being threatened by its neighbor Iran.

"The visit comes against the background of a period saturated with security challenges,” stated Gallant ahead of his important visit to the Muslim-majority nation.

“I will present to the Azerbaijanis, in an accurate manner, the global danger of military nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran. I will detail to them the dangerous actions that Iran is doing within the borders of Israel... and throughout the Middle East,” added the Jewish state’s defense minister.

Azerbaijani Minister of Defense Col.-Gen. Zakir Hasanov welcomed his Israeli counterpart in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

Gallant praised Azerbaijan as both a strategic partner and a valuable asset amid global security challenges.

“The visit to Azerbaijan at this particular time, when our region and the world face a growing number of complex security challenges, reflects our shared commitment to take our ties ‘to the next level.’

"I am certain that this is only the beginning of an enduring partnership," Gallant affirmed. "The potential for defense, industrial and military exchanges is only growing. Azerbaijan is not only a strategic partner but also an asset – with great regional influence in the economic, energy security and additional fields,” stated the Israeli defense minister.

Gallant's visit came shortly after Azerbaijan security announced it had arrested an Afghan citizen, who reportedly was plotting a terror attack against the Israeli embassy in Baku.

The Afghan suspect is believed to have acted on orders from a third country, believed to be the Islamic Republic of Iran.
