'Inconceivable' – UN official’s incendiary post draws widespread condemnation, calls for 'her immediate removal'
After openly concurring with a post comparing Netanyahu with Hitler on 𝕏, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese faced criticism, leaving many to wonder how she remains in her position.
“It is inconceivable,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry posted on 𝕏, “that Francesca Albanese is still allowed to use the UN as a shield to spread antisemitism.”
U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield agreed.
“There is no place for antisemitism from UN-affiliated officials tasked with promoting human rights. While the United States has never supported Francesca Albanese’s mandate, it is clear she is not fit for this or any position at the UN,” she wrote on 𝕏.
Albanese, who has already faced condemnation for her documented bias against Israel, agreed with a post comparing Netanyahu to Hitler, replying: “That is precisely what I was thinking today.”
Her reaction to the post caused what would have been described as a Twitter storm. The original post by Craig Mokhiber, a former UN Human Rights official, juxtaposed two black and white images of the men alongside one another with the caption: “History is always watching.”
In an article on the subject, the World Jewish Congress delineated how such comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany constitute Holocaust inversion.
Many others, including officials and representatives of various NGOs, weighed in on the platform to denounce the comparison.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry posted the following statement: “UN Special Rapporteur Albanese is beyond redemption. Once again she spreads vile hatred and abuses the memory of the Holocaust.”
UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer wrote: “UN official Francesca Albanese compares Israel's PM to Hitler. She believes 'the Jewish lobby' controls America, BBC has 'the Israeli lobby inside your veins' & Hamas has a 'right to resist.' We call on all democracies to demand her immediate removal.”
Michele Taylor, United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council, added her statement: “Special rapporteurs should be striving to improve human rights challenges, not employing dehumanizing rhetoric.”
