The Jordanian government has just made a dramatic and very positive move by outlawing all activities by the Muslim Brotherhood inside the Kingdom.

“Interior Minister Mazen Farraya on Wednesday announced that the disbanded Muslim Brotherhood will be considered an illegal group effective immediately, in accordance with the law,” reported Petra News, a Jordanian media outlet.

All offices used by the Brotherhood “will be closed, even if such venues are set up under the guise of other entities,” the report noted, “adding that any action otherwise would be subject to legal accountability.”

Farraya emphasized that “political entities, media outlets, users on various social media platforms, civil society organizations, and other entities are prohibited from dealing with or publishing anything by the Muslim Brotherhood or any of its arms and affiliates.”

The minister stressed that the authorities will take action against any individual, organization, or entity working with the Brotherhood in any way.

For years, the Jordanian government has tried to give wide latitude to the Islamist group, even though other Arab countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain made the Brotherhood illegal years ago.

But Jordan is moving quickly against the group this week after security forces uncovered and thwarted a “plot targeting national security,” in which MB operatives allegedly “attempted to smuggle and destroy large quantities of documents from its headquarters to hide its suspicious activities and affiliations,” Petra reported.

“Security agencies uncovered an operation to manufacture and test explosives,” which allegedly was “carried out by the son of one of the Muslim Brotherhood’s leaders, along with others who sought to target security agencies and sensitive sites in the Kingdom,” the report noted.

“We are at a time when concerted efforts are greatly needed to fulfill the aspirations of the Jordanian people,” Farraya added.
