Footage: Meeting between Israeli Druze leader and Lebanese president at inauguration ceremony of Pope Leo XIV

In a rare video shared Sunday on social media, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is seen shaking hands with the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, Sheikh Mowafak Tarif, on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the newly appointed Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.
Druze-Lebanese politician Wiam Wahhab posted the photo, describing it as "the response to all the fools, hypocrites, and haters," and thanked President Aoun for the gesture.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog is also expected to attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, where he will represent the State of Israel. The event is set to host dozens of heads of state and world leaders.
In his inaugural mass today, the incoming pope stated: “I wish to preserve the rich heritage of the Church, but also to respond to modern challenges. There is no place in the church for ‘religious propaganda’ or power games. I call for charity and unity.”
The Vatican announced about a week and a half ago that a new pope had been elected – American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who chose the name “Leo XIV.” He is the first American to serve in the role.
Prevost, aged 69, spent much of his career as a missionary in Peru and eventually became a naturalized citizen there. He is relatively unknown on the global stage. After being appointed a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023, he gave only a few interviews and generally avoids public speaking.
Born in Chicago, Prevost gained attention among his peers for his quiet demeanor and support for Pope Francis’ 12-year papacy, especially his commitment to issues of social justice. He served as bishop of Chiclayo, in northwestern Peru, from 2015 to 2023.
