Argentinian President Milei blasts UN for double standards against Israel
Argentinian President Javier Milei defended Israel and criticized the United Nations for what he described as hostility and hypocrisy toward the Jewish state, as it continues to face attacks from Hezbollah, Hamas, and other Iranian-backed terrorist groups.
“Israel is unjustly targeted while regimes that oppress their people are given a platform,” Milei stated during his address to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City.
He also called out the United Nations regarding its charter to defend human rights.
"In this same house, we, that purports to defend human rights, we have also included bloody dictatorships in the Human Rights Council, including Cuba and Venezuela without reproach," the Argentinian leader said.
"In this same house, which purports to defend the rights of women, we've allowed on the CEDAW Committee countries that punish their women just for showing their skin," he continued.
Milei blasted the UN for targeting the State of Israel, saying that it is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East region.
"And this same house has voted against the State of Israel, which is the only country in the Middle East to defend liberal democracy," Milei said.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon praised Milei's courage and show of solidarity with Israel.
"Thank you, President Milei! You are a true friend of the State of Israel," Danon stated. "In this hall where they slandered Israel all day, you showed courage and supported Israel!" he added.
Javier Milei, who became Argentina's president in December, has emerged as a strong supporter of Israel.
In February, after just two months in office, he made an official state visit to Israel and condemned the Hamas terrorist organization for the Oct. 7 terror attack last October. He vowed to eventually move the Argentinian Embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv to Israel's capital Jerusalem.
“Your stalwart support for Israel in so many forms is deeply, deeply appreciated. Welcome to Jerusalem. Welcome, friend,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the time. “We are delighted with your decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move your diplomatic post there and also, of course, an embassy.”
In July, under Milei's leadership of Milei, Argentina joined a group of nations that officially defined Hamas as a terrorist organization.
Milei has also "ordered a freeze on the financial assets of the Palestinian group,” a move aimed at making it more difficult for Hamas and other terror groups to raise funds in Argentina.
Argentina has also stepped up its efforts to increase security for its Jewish community.
In August, the Argentinian police arrested seven members of an Islamist group that was planning terror attacks on Jewish targets.
According to the World Jewish Congress, Argentina has an estimated 180,000 to 200,000 Jews, making it the largest in Latin America and the seventh-largest globally. The majority of the Jewish population is concentrated in Buenos Aires.
